Dr. Anthony Toussaint (1960-2018), Chicago Section ACS Chair 2018

It is with great sadness that we report that our colleague, friend, and 2018 Chair of the Chicago Section, Dr. Anthony (Tony) Toussaint, passed away Thursday morning, June 21, 2018.

Dr. Toussaint had been an active member of the American Chemical Society since 1988 and was elected by his colleagues as the 2018 Chair of the Chicago Section. His career included roles in R&D leadership at Alcatel, DSM, and most recently at ICL–Performance Products in Hammond, IN. He was an invaluable member of the Chicago Section who participated regularly in our public outreach programs. As Chair of the Employment and Professional Relations Committee, he was often seen hosting the Employment Committee sessions at our monthly meetings.

Dr. Toussaint earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry/Chemical Engineering from University College London and an MBA from Northwestern University Kellogg School of Management.

Tony’s positive attitude and active role in the American Chemical Society will be sorely missed by all of us who had the opportunity to know and work with him.

Anthony Toussaint, our 2018 Chair of the Chicago Section, died June 21, 2018 from surgical complications. Dr. Toussaint was born in London, England and is the third son in a family of four boys.

He earned his B.Sc. in Chemistry from Leicester University in the UK. This was followed by earning a M.Sc. in Surface Chemistry and Colloids from Bristol University and his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University College London. Dr. Toussaint did a Postdoc at the State University of New York, College of Environmental Science and Forestry in New York with Dr. Philip Luner which was followed by a MBA from Northwestern University Kellogg School of Management.

Tony worked for The Sherwin Williams Company in both Chicago and Cleveland, Sandoz Agro Inc. in Des Plaines, DSM Desotech/DSM Functional Materials in Elgin, St. Sabina Employment Resource Center in Chicago and East West University in Chicago. He was currently employed at ICL Performance Products in Hammond, Indiana in R & D management.

Dr. Toussaint also held the position of co-director of a summer jobs program at the St. Sabina Employment Resource Center. Tony hired mentors, worked with employers and placed five hundred 15-24 year olds in summer jobs in the community. He found that placing young people into jobs who are challenged by the lack of opportunities and often a result of the lack of educational qualifications very rewarding.

Tony enjoyed playing golf and mentoring young people in the community. He also enjoyed listening to music, especially Gospel, Reggae and R & B.

Tony ran in the Chicago Marathon in 2009 and 2010. One quote he shared with the Section for the “Someone You Should Know” article was “Never get comfortable with where you are. Always look to grow, learn new things, challenge yourself, this often requires getting out of your comfort zone.” Wise words for all of us to remember.

The Section sends its condolences to his family in the UK. Rest in peace Tony, the Section is grateful for your service as Chair of the Chicago Section.
