    "Communicating My Passion for Chemistry"

    ABSTRACT

    Chemistry gets a bad rap at times. Some people recall agonizing memories of their learning experience or that they had difficulty understanding the concepts — both of which have likely contributed to a fearful preconception for new young learners. On the other end of the spectrum, I have long known that I wanted to be a chemistry teacher, driven by my passion to promote chemistry to all. Although not everyone will love chemistry the way I do, I still believe that everyone can at least learn to appreciate it. I especially love seeing the excitement and wonder in the eyes of younger students. That is why I serve as a mentor in many communities, working with both teachers and kids of all ages to help them learn about the beauty, immediacy, and relevancy of chemistry in all our lives. This presentation will follow my career path up to the present, how others can do the same and what comes next. Make your passion for science contagious and bring renewed life to your classroom as you train the next generation of scientists.

    Meet the Speaker

    Ms. Sherri Conn Rukes is currently teaching Advanced Placement (AP) Chemistry and Chemistry Honors at Libertyville High School in Libertyville, IL. During her teaching career, she has taught a wide range of classes at all levels of Physics, Chemistry and Physical Science. She earned a B.S. in Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana and a Masters from NOVA Southeastern University in Florida. She continues to take classes in Chemistry and Materials Science. For several summers Sherri has done research at Northwestern University in materials science and at Abbott Laboratories. Some of the topics she has researched are the degradation of multi-walled nanotubes (MWNT) in a tri-block copolymer, the efficiency of solid-oxide fuel cells, and two projects on the conservation of famous artwork – one on George Seurat’s A Sunday of La Grande Jatte and the other on paints used by Picasso. Some of her research has been published and cited in scientific journals. Sherri is a past president of the American Association of Chemistry Teachers (AACT) and past chair of the Chicago Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS). She has received numerous honors including the Golden Apple in 2016 and the Regional ACS Teachers Award in 2017, and she was selected as an ACS Fellow in 2020. Sherri has given many presentations at national ACS meetings and at the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) conferences, as well as at Illinois state gatherings. She is a Master Teacher for the American Society for Metals (ASM), teaching Materials Science to teachers. She has helped create curricula for various organizations and different states. She is also a member of the ACS Committee on Community Activities.
